Africa’s health data remains highly fragmented and lacks the appropriate structure to ensure privacy, interoperability, and patient agency in both personalized care and population-level health surveillance. Despite having the highest disease burden globally which is 25%, less than 2% of clinical trials for new medicines and medical devices are conducted on the continent. This also leads to insignificant presence of Africa in patent applications but even waiting to access cutting edge medications or devices from 10-20 years once the patent rights expire and generic medicine is made.
